Okay I'm really going off my rocker here ... and am starting to keep 
notes on configuring X, xterm and the like.

# X settings

$ xdpyinfo - shows lots and lots of your current X settings

# xterm

xterm defaults go in ~/.Xdefaults
Reload settings with this:
	$ xrdb -load .Xdefaults

Good settings to have:
-aw (wraparound)
-geometry 80x25
-j smooth scrolling
-ls login shell (read .profile)
-sb scrollbar
-si turn off reposition when text is srcolling
-sl <num> number of lines to keep in scrollback, default 64

# playing with resolutions

use ctrl-alt-+ and ctrl-alt-- to switch between options in Modes line in 
xorg.conf

emerge chgres to change res on the cli

# playing with packages

dsx - choose your window manager on the cli
